2018-2019 Overture Season

Classics 1 - THE REBELS - September 15, 2018
Conductor, Alexander Mickelthwate

Rebels in music transcend all generations and time periods. This concert features compositions by rebels in their own time, each blazing a trail to a new future in music. Beethoven was greatly influenced by the ideals of the French Revolution and his impressions of the world during transitions of power, from monarchy to democracy. Influences of this may be heard in this symphony which was his only one with a dramatic choral line. Berlioz was a different kind of rebel. He was the first free composer not subject to the whims and patronage of the nobility. His rebellion lies in the fact that for the first time he could compose based on his personal life -- unheard of before the Revolution. Jump forward to the 21st century to Tan Dun, another rebel who composed for instruments and sounds of our time … come to the concert to experience this rebel’s work!
